CELA connects emerging literary artists across Europe
The talent development project CELA — Connecting Emerging Literary Artists inaugurates, in 2017, a two-year programme for European authors and translators. CELA is a project which brings 6 countries together — Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands and Romania —, and 7 partners – Booktailors, Escuela de Escritores, GAV/Cinepub, Huis deBuren, Passa Porta, Pisa Book Festival and Wintertuin.
The aim of the programme is to increase a new generation of literary creators’ ability to work together on an international scale and for the European public. CELA offers a selection of 18 emerging authors, 24 emerging translators, 6 emerging literary professionals and 7 literary organisations a trajectory of training, tools and a network. The selected talents will learn how to build an international career and a combined professional practice.
In the first year, the seven organisations will work together to select and guide the authors, translators and literary professionals, and to offer them a multi-country programme of training and master classes to prepare them to work on the European market and for an international public. The programme will thus provide new voices in literature with the necessary skills, international network and material for the second year, when they will be introduced to the European market.
In 2018 and 2019, the participants will be launched through international marketing and publicity campaigns, a European tour to six festivals, and networking with well-known writers and literary organisations. By participating in this project, literary talents will gain access to many professionals from the publishing industry.
Since 2014, seven literary organisations and professionals from six European countries have joined forces to set up the talent development project CELA. The partners share the need to build a sustainable talent development infrastructure to maintain diversity in European literature, and give literary talents the professional boost they need to become successful. Focusing on skill-building and transnational mobility, CELA integrates digital opportunities for literature, new ways of creating revenue and employability for its participants.
